History

Great Southern Kart Club was formed in 1992.  It would not have existed at all without the efforts of Ian & Sue Ball, who graded a track out on their property east of Wagin.

When Ian left town, the club went into recess for a year until a new location for the track could be found.

A location was found at the old Wagin Rifle range, north of Wagin on the Great Southern Highway with the assistance of the Shire of Wagin and thanks to the efforts of all the members and a number of non-members, particularly DI & PE Blake Earthmoving and Tom Johnson, the track was formed.  When racing started at the current venue the canteen operated out of an old caravan and for the first couple of meetings the tower staff operated from the back of a ute because there were no steps to the tower.

It was around 2000 when the club really started to progress, with an application to AIDKA for the right to host the 2003 Australian Dirt Kart Titles, with Bevan Kellow as president  of the club at the time and Barry Pages the driving forces behind the application.  The club was successful and set about getting the venue ready and doing the necessary improvements to hold such a prestigious event. It was the first time in AIDKA history that the Australian Dirt Kart Titles had been held in WA.

This included putting up the new clubhouse and toilet facilities and brick paved verandahs plus lighting on the track to enable the club to hold night race meetings.  Barry Pages was instrumental in making sure the lighting was well above the expected standard.  At the conclusion of the 2003 Australian Dirt Kart Titles at Great Southern, the club received praise from all that attended, with the majority saying it was the best Australian Dirt Kart Title they had attended.

Great Southern have since held the WA State Titles in 2008, 2012 and 2015.

A big thanks must go to the Shire of Wagin for their massive support for the club since 1996 and in particular for the loan of the grader and roller for previous busy bees. Thanks to the local businesses for their support over the years and to all the past and present members.

10 past and present members of Great Southern Kart Club have been honoured with life membership for their hard work and commitment to the club.
